Bobcats Handle Hawks 103-83
Around 5pm, I stretched out for a nap and dreamed the Bobcats pulled away from the Hawks in the second quarter and never really got threatened again on their way to a 103-83 win.
I even dreamed the details, like the Cats' dominance on the boards and a wide spread of minutes across the roster on the first day of a back to back. Imagine my surprise as the game played out just like mostly like my dream. Highlights and lowlights after the jump:
BAD
-- It looks like Vladimir Radmanovic still hasn't gotten into the groove of things. We knew when we got him that dude's streaky, but this is bordering on absurd.
-- Stephen Graham got more than 13 minutes. Gerald Henderson got fewer than 4. I refuse to believe that even in Henderson's "raw" rookie state, he can't be as productive as Graham right now, and that's before considering the benefits of letting him work on his game for next season and beyond.
GOOD
-- Enjoy it while it lasts. Gerald Wallace is putting up Pistons-era Dennis Rodman numbers, from the small forward position. 11 points and 18 rebounds for Crash.
-- Raja Bell couldn't miss tonight, shooting 5-6 from three and ending up with 24 points.. That's good, but there's no way we can expect anything close to that kind of production from him going forward.
-- Same for Tyson Chandler, who was 5-5 from the field, with 10 rebounds. Unlike Bell, thought, I'm pretty sure Chandler has the capacity to repeat that over the course of the season.
-- Ronald Murray stepped in and was the Flip of old. The man took 12 shots in just under 18 minutes, including 5 three point attempts, making three. He is who he is, and changing his habits now is probably a losing proposition, so the most important thing is to see him actually on the floor.
-- Rebounding advantage for the Bobcats: 56-35.
-- Perhaps it was because the Hawks were coming back home off a west coast swing, but the Cats' defense still stifled them. Atlanta shot under 40% for the game and only 2-16 from three.

A few observations
This will be pretty minor since there was no television and I couldn’t find a radio station that was streaming the game online. (AM reception in my part of NC is just about non-existent. I was actually supposed to attend the game, but my wife took somewhat ill today and family always comes first, even when we’re talking about the Bobcats.
Since David mentioned HIS dream, I’ll just point out in passing that, however sarcastically, I predicted a possible score for this game of something like 105-82, so I wasn’t that far off either! Since I was making a joke at the time I won’t actually take credit. I did however, say that it would be a sign that management knew what they were doing if we actually blew out the Hawks by that kind of margin.
So do they know something we don’t? Sadly, I really don’t think so. Players like Bell had remarkable games that we can’t realistically expect to happen with a game-to-game regularity. Wallace’s production was actually down a bit from the lofty heights we’ve been seeing thus far, but for once we didn’t need his points quite as badly.
It appears (and admittedly I didn’t see the game, just followed the box score live online) that what made the difference for us was that our outside shooting finally kicked in. Teams that live by the long ball die by it as well when the cold snaps set in. I don’t believe the numbers of our starting forwards give us any reason to feel optimistic for the long term.
Defensively our team has become something worthy of major respect from the league. Our rebounding is off the hook and it’s been the main point of consistency thus far. If we can hold our opponents’ shooting percentages down on a regular basis the way we’ve managed to so far this young season, we’re going to be in a lot of games where we used to get blown off the court.
Apparently Chandler is showing signs of actually coming to life although his scoring was only slightly better than the last game. He did take in 10 boards and rack up a double-double for us, including reaching double-digits for the first time as a Bobcat. Here’s hoping.
We still aren’t getting what we need out of VladRad and I’ll be amazed if he’s still wearing a Charlotte uniform at the end of the season. The Cats have been shopping him around for so long I expect to find him in the markdown bin at Wallmart any day now.
DJ gave us the sort of game we can probably expect from him when the starters are making it exciting.
So here we are, 3-2 on the young season and this was one of those games against a “better” team that we need to steal here and there to be serious contenders. We also stole it at home. We all know how it works – win ‘em at home, take a couple on the road, and you find yourself headed to the playoffs. It’s the tried and true NBA formula. So far, a few short steps on the pathway, we’re doing it the way it needs to be done.
It may be time for tears soon, but right now, until tip-off tomorrow night in Chicago anyway, we have the luxury of being fans of a team with a winning record that just blew out a team that should have given us some real trouble.
Here’s to our Charlotte Bobcats! Hey David? Do us a favor and have a dream tonight where the Cats crush the Bulls tomorrow night on their way to a season that sees us with a winning record and a sweep of the Celtics for the conference championship.
(Oh yeah, we just KNOW the Lakers are looking at the league scoreboard and shaking in terror at the thought of the DEADLY and DANGEROUS Bobcats)
Well, at least we should be able to come down to earth enough to give Coach Brown and Tyson Chandler a night off from our continual roasting of them in effigy. Respect is earned one game at a time and tonight the Bobcats have, in my opinion, taken us in the right direction.
A few points ourday
We can all agree that Bell is not capable of 20ppg. What Bell showed last night is how dynamic this team could be with a go to scorer. Flip and D.J. showed that they’re great bench scorers, but this team is one trade away from being a certain playoff team (I’m optimistic, so sue me).
Tonight, Chandler provided what he was expected to. So in that sense he had a GREAT game. No reasonable person said Chandler’s going to score as much as Okafor. What I said, and many others have said is that (if healthy) Chandler is going to give us about 10 points, 10 boards, and 2 blocks a night. And he’s going to do it efficiently. Can’t get much more efficient that 5 of 5 shooting. He played solid team defense last night, which should be no surprise to anyone. The Chandler trade wasn’t entirely (if at all) a basketball decision, but that doesn’t mean he’s the clown that people have been saying he is for the past 3 months. The key issue with Chandler is health, not abilities.
Chandler is a clown.
If you’re a professional basketball player and you can’t hit a shot outside of two feet, you’re a clown.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Good job Bobcats
We are on the right direction. Coach LB is doing the right job. Hopefully we can match up the energy of Derick Rose and the Bulls.. Good Luck Bobcats!!!
You forgot to mention the assists ratio, 24:10 in favor of the cats
Besides Wallace’s monster performance on the boards and Flips 15 points that was probably my favorite stat of the night.
Vlad is struggling, but I think largely because he’s being asked to play more in the post this year. That’s just not his game. I give him props for trying to do what the team needs though. He made his only shot attempt but got into early foul trouble. Luckily, every other front court player had a solid night.
