Gameday Preview vs Cleveland Cavaliers

Pump Up Music: Motorhead -- "Ace of Spades"

The Big Picture: The Bobcats are coming off two impressive wins and the Cavaliers are coming off three straight victories. I'm still on board the Cavs Will Win It All Bandwagon, even though the Shaquille O'Neal experiment isn't going as swimmingly as they'd hoped, but that's primarily because I wouldn't bet against LeBron James in any scenario, at this point.

Star-divide

At this stage of his career, Shaq should be a depth player in Cleveland. What I mean by that is that while he's perfectly capable of starting and producing for a lot of teams in the league (for instance, Boston would swap out Perkins for him instantly, cost aside), on this particular team, he should only get big minutes when the matchup determines it or Zydrunas Ilgauskas is unable to split minutes with him. They haven't missed a beat without Shaq the past few games, and he's questionable for tonight's game, so we'll see if the Cavs play it safe with the Older Aristotle and sit him out again.

As for the rest of the team, I've mentioned this before, but I think it bears repeating: The Cavs have the personnel to play any style successfully. They've got shooters, runners, and bangers. They don't play any single style better than anyone else, but they can hang with any kind of game that's dictated to them. The thing is, I'm convinced that if they embraced an up-tempo game, they'd be playing to their strengths.

Specifically, I'd play LeBron at the nominal power forward position along with Mo, Delonte, Parker, and a center,or if they want more size, Moon at small forward with Parker moved to guard. Basically, I get why they didn't want to trade Z for Stephen Jackson, but from a purely basketball point of view, I'd be slobbering over the chance to play S-Jax at the three with LBJ at the four, and I think Cleveland missed an opportunity to upgrade significantly when we snatched Cap'n Jack before they could.

Key Matchup: I'm not too concerned with any of the individual matchups in this game. We know Crash and S-Jax are going to have their hands full with LeBron, and there really isn't anything they can do about it. A Shaq/Z combo scares me a lot more than a Z/Sideshow  Bob combo because Varejao doesn't provide the kind of offensive variation from Z that Shaq does. Similarly, Boris Diaw is reasonably equipped to deal with J.J.Hickson or Varejao.

If I had to pick one to worry about, I'd choose the point guard battle. Mo Williams is a much more comfortable point guard to watch than any of the guys we throw out there at the position. First, it should be noted that Raymond Felton has had his minutes cut over the past few games in favor of more minutes for Ronald Murray. Felton is probably the best defensive PG we have, but I'm not sure that Murray's defensive deficiencies outweigh the offensive potential he brings. The hell of it is that Murray can't be trusted to actually be productive on any given night. Such is the gift and the curse of the gunner. It would be nice to have confidence in Felton's offense, but his entire career has eroded that confidence. It would be nice to think about turning to D.J. Augustin, but D.J.'s regressed so dramatically this season that I'm not entirely sure that sticking him out there is necessarily the best course of action any more.

Detail That Might Interest .08% of You: Gerald Wallace and Jamario Moon were on opposite sides of a fierce high school hoops rivalry in rural Alabama.

I hope LB continues to play the rookies....

and doesn’t automatically flinch at the sight of a playoff caliber team and shrink his roatation to 8 veteran guys.

Anyone know the word on Diaw?

Think he’ll have his minutes limited?

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving

Apparently the people running the blogs in Cleveland are still digesting turkey because not a single one of the 6 blogs I checked has been updated as of yet.
I did learn surfing the web elsewhere that Shaq will indeed be playing tonight but the coach plans to restrict him to under 15 minutes to allow him to work back into playing shape.

In addition, Boris Diaw participated in the shootaround today and said he is healthy enough to play tonight unless his ankle stiffens up prior to gametime.

I did have some fun finding a couple of articles previewing tonights game saying things like “Should the NBA Beware the Bobcats?” and pointing out the stats of the past two Cats games as an indicator that we’re emerging as a hot team.

As to tonight itself…

The Cavs are better at clogging up the lanes than any other team this season and are very stingy allowing points in the paint. This is going to be a beastly test for our new “spread” halfcourt offense that has worked to well against the Pacers and Raptors. I’m not looking for a win tonight (although I’ll be out of my mind happy if we pull it out) but I do expect the Cats to hang tough. The one weakness the Cavs have shown is an inability to put teams away. Even in their last game against Detroit the Pistons climbed back from almost 20 down to come to within 5 before finally succumbing. If the Cats can stay within range of the Cavs for the first 3 quarters they may just suprise King James and Co.

I’m more excited about heading to play the Wizards because regardless of the outcome tonight, I think the Wizards are fair bait for our first road win.

Good luck Fightin’ Felines!

First… it’s not just this game they’re slow updating for…that’s been happening since about game #12…

Second…What I read (cleveland.com) had MB playing Shaq MAX 24-26 minutes

Third…It’s not really an inability to put teams away, it’s more a loss of focus once they have a sizable lead…If the Cavs could stay awake for four quarters, they would be on top in the East right now

Hope to see some real basketball tonight for a change…Good luck, Bobcats

I really hope we see Derrick Brown and Henderson tonight

their scoring ability could turn out to be the difference between a W and a L

Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER

Man I want to go so bad

Apparently they’ve been sold out for a while and the cheapest you can buy from the stadium is $70 and scalpers are selling upper deck for $30

Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is.

You can buy tickets at the box office when it's sold out?

Huh? How does that work?

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Wish I could be in the Cable Box as well

Ok, first, off, sorry, I hate using the term ‘Cable Box’ but at the same time I think it’s funny nickname for our arena…anyway…

Tonight will be a very interesting game, and it’s really going to test us. Now, if we play like our two previous games, and if Larry Brown takes advantage of his full rotation, then I think we will be competitive. Win? Probably not. Of course, I’ll be thrilled if we do.

Hopefully I’ll be able to track down a website to watch the game, because this should be interesting.

And it’s nice to see that we’re apparently “sold out” for this game. Too bad it’s just bandwagon LeBron fans and not Bobcats fans, but alas, tickets sold are still tickets sold.

Cavs will win it all...

Seriously? I don’t agree with that for a second. They’re not as good as the Lakers, Cletics, or Magic. Their roster outside of LBJ is a joke. Mo’ Williams had no business being on the all-star team last year. it took 2 injuries and a bunch of whining and complaining to get him on there, and still the only reason he made it was because of the team’s record. Big Z is done. He’s not hitting shots and watching him try to run makes my knees hurt. Verejao is a decent defender, but he can’t guard Rashard (proven last year), Rasheed, Gasol, KG… Shaw just takes up space and can’t guard the pick and roll. Parker and Moon are proven bench players forced into starting. Boobie Gibson is a poor man’s Eddie House (who isn’t exactly a star). As someone who suffers from bipolar disorder I feel for Delonte West and it’s a shame that his talent and usefulness are limited by his struggles, but it’s also a fact. As an alumni of NC State I’m a little partial towards Hickson and he’s doing a great job.

You hit on one of their biggest problems. Mike Brown can’t coach offense. He’s not creative enough to take advantage of LeBron’s insane talents. They just stand around and watch LeBron.

Does that sound like a chapmionship team?

I just got around to watching the Raptors game (had to record,w ent out of town for Thanksgiving). A lot of impressive things, but one thing really stood out to me. What has happened to Larry Brown? He’s playing rookies because they earned it. Since they’ve started playing, we’ve started running which is key when you don’t really have a go to guy. The defense is much improved. The rotations are crisp, we’re gambling less, just a much more disciplined defense (which isn’t too surprising for an LB team). I love when we go small. I’m just really impressed with Larry’s willingness to adjust to this roster and maximize its potential. A pleasant surprise for a normally strong headed, unmoving personality.

One other thing, Tyson played a great game last night. Yes, more foul trouble. But he changed so many shots. He even showed an offensive move or 2. I say give him at least half the season to figure it out, especially with LB teaching him. Obviously keep expectations tempered, but don’t scream to trade him yet.

Funny that Moon is a "proven bench player..."

Given he started 85% of his career games before signing with Clevelands.

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.
