Bobcats Win 79-68
Epically bad basketball can still be compelling basketball. Some comments from the game thread describing the Bobcats' 79-68 win over the Nets tonight:
I could go find four other guys in my neighborhood and we could score 10 points in a quarter.
The Bobcats aren’t going to match the Panthers’ first-half output from Sunday.
This reminds me of a Big Ten regular season game.
I thought we were here to see a pro game. This looks like a mid-tier CAA matchup.
Yup. That was about right. This train wreck is what happens when two abysmal offenses, a very good defense, and a well-coached defense meet. All that said, it was certainly entertaining in the sense that the game was in doubt the entire time. Sure, we should have put away the Nets handily, but I think just about everyone who's watched the Cats this year is starting to realize just how bad the offense is. My creeping suspicion is that we have an outside shot at being a historically poor offense, pending Ronald Murray's return, or a roster shakeup.
Highlights and lowlights after the jump:
BAD
-- 79 points on about 30% shooting. 1-15 from three. Ouch. The Nets exposed the Bobcats' shooting woes in a painful way, playing zone roughly 1/3 of the time. Fortunately, only Brook Lopez could anchor it, and he got into foul trouble.
GOOD
-- HOLY CRAP GERALD WALLACE HAD 24 POINTS AND 20 REBOUNDS. My face is melting.
-- D.J. Augustin also stepped up, scoring 21 points on 6-14 shooting and getting to the line for 10 free throws.

Depressing stat of the day
the bobcats shoot 6.7% from 3pt range
Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER
rest of the team=*yawn*
Why did Gerald Henderson only get 4 minutes?
and why did Radman and Graham get more than 10?
Blogging at Ridiculous Upside, where my terrible writing meets people's eyes.
Radman
I think he was left in so long with the hopes that he would makes some shots over New Jersey’s zone. He proceeded to go 0-7 from the floor, including 0-3 from three. Phenomenal.
yeah but he was inactive
But yeah, if VladRad keeps this up, he might be placed on the inactive list soon!
Does that imply that you expect ot be at some point?

Terrible offense
Dude…
We need an offense. If you wanna play the right way, that is. We need a roster shake up, methinks.
We got exactly what we ordered.
When you trade a competent (if unexplosive) scorer for a guy who can’t score at all, your offense is going to get markedly worse.

Wow
I don’t know what to say. I’m glad we won, and I"m glad we picked it up in the 2nd half, but yikes!!! The Nets might be the only team in the NBA that we can play that poorly against and still come away with a win!
Wallace was magnificent. But I’m with you guys! Wheres Henderson!?!? If VladRad and Graham aren’t getting it done, give the rookie some minutes.
Chandler still isn’t where I want him to be, but he made some free throws, grabbed a few boards and got a dunk or two so hes getting there.
And D.J. took control in the 2nd half! Did anybody see the post game interview with D.J. and Stephanie Ready when Wallace walked in and kissed him on the cheek and said great job!? haha, that was probably the best part of the whole night!
The Nets backups, mind you.
And everybody needs to give up on seeing Henderson get PT over Graham and Radmanovic. He’s a rookie, and Brown hates rookies. Among the rookies he’s wasted: David Lee, Nate Robinson, Channign Frye (sure would be nice to have him this season, huh?), Carlos Delfino, Darko Milicic, John Salmons, Speedy Claxton, Samuel Dalembert, Raja Bell, Jumaine Jones, Todd MacCulloch, Larry Hughes, Nazr Mohammed…the list goes on and on. And while those guys certainly aren’t all-stars by any means, they all were solid rotation players at some point in their careers who were absolutely buried by Brown.

I love the old NBA on NBC theme song. It’s EPIC.
That’s on the list, for sure. I was waiting for John Tesh to be in the news again first:)

There's no point comparing any other Felton v. Augustin stat except this one:
Felton: +3
Augustin: +17

A few observations
Once again we have the tale of two halves, only this time it was reversed. The Charlotte Bobcats showed up for the game tonight at 8:45 – but unfortunately, the tipoff came over an hour earlier.
I lived in Boston for 19 years and all but lived at the Boston Garden for 10 of them. In over 40 years of watching basketball – everything from the pros to rec leagues to pickup games – I have never seen a team play a worse half than the Charlotte Bobcats did tonight.
A few nights ago, David took a pretty healthy dump on Raymond Felton. I still believe he was mistaken, but in one sense he was dead-on right; Felton is not, and never will be, a go-to guy in the NBA. Unfortunately, he’s gotten it into his head that if he doesn’t force the ball to the hole, nobody else will. Thus far this season his teammates have done little to prove him wrong. The result is that he’s showing Michael Jordan’s heart, but against any team with something resembling a defense, he’s playing like Michael Jordan trying to hit an inside curve ball.
Felton did take a healthy right jab to the stitches tonight, but that doesn’t excuse his or the other guards’ inability to set up a play or make an effective pass for 18 seconds of a possession. Is it that the 3 front men aren’t getting open? If it were just Felton, I’d drop it all on his shoulders, but this has become an epidemic across the board.
Earlier today I said the Cats had the capacity to run away with this game. But I felt that if it happened it would be in the first half and they’d be able to coast to the final buzzer. No such luck. At one point tonight Del Curry said that Radmad looked like he was trying to shoot 3-pointers into a thimble. I couldn’t agree more.
We can rave about Wallace all we want, but the reality is that his offense is more from tenacity under the boards – putbacks etc – and at the free-throw line. It isn’t coming from set plays. He scored on a fast break tonight and even the commentators stated repeatedly that it was the ONLY easy basket he’s seen. If we don’t start getting into an offensive flow SOON we’ll be writing eulogies for him before the season is over. He’s killing himself out there and we’re profoundly fortunate he’s willing to do it. But he’s going to get hurt – and badly – if we don’t provide him with support.
Who would have thought we’d unload Okafor and IMPROVE so much in rebounding? Getting rid of him is looking more like a genius decision every game. The problem is, Tyson Chandler is just not getting the job done. Another night with single-digit scoring. He went an entire half without a foul but still managed to rack up 5 of them in the second half. Hooray, he’s getting a lot of minutes! But his production is simply deplorable.
Why in the name of God did Henderson only see 4 minutes on the court tonight? He has shown the potential of a possible rookie of the year candidate and he’s not being given nearly enough time to learn and grow in this league.
Yeah, I know it’s early in the season and I know we won. But, like most of you, I’m starting to get very frightened by an offense that backfires more than the customers at a bad Mexican restaurant. I think it’s premature to start screaming for roster changes, but if things don’t improve within the next couple of games, we’ll need to make changes or be doomed to write off this season entirely before the All Star balloting kicks in.
Next up is a home and away back to back. The Hawks and then the Bulls in Chicago.
If we play even one hapless quarter in the coming two games we’re going to lose both – and by an ENORMOUS margin. Assuming Tyson and company can’t get it together any better than they have thus far for a full 4 quarters, it’s going to be an ugly weekend. I think we have to brace ourselves for a double-digit loss on Friday, and something very close to it on Saturday in the Windy City. And that’s WITH Murray returning as hoped. Augustin and Wallace simply cannot continue to pull off miracles – especially with it becoming quickly apparent to the rest of the league that they are our only offensive threats. They’ll simply be surrounded by double teams and dump back out to Felton who will promptly feel forced to take a left handed 17 foot jump shot while in the midst of a cartwheel.
I love this team and I think the pieces are there. But unless they start to come together quickly, I think we’re all going to know what it’s like to be Cubs fans.
We didn't improve in rebounding because of the trade.
We’ve “improved” in rebounding because our shooting has been so atrocious. Last season, we rebounded at 50.5%. This season, it’s at 51.5%, a less than 2% change that is negligible, particularly given it’s been only four games and two of them have been against NY and NJ, two of the NBA’s worst rebounding teams from a year ago.
As for Henderson, I love the guy and his future potential as a versatile stopper who can put some points in the basket, but to suggest he’s got “rookie of the year” potential is ridiculous. He’s shooting .412 (that’s barely better than Felton’s mark which I rip him for endlessly), his A:TO ratio is .5, and he’s not really hitting the boards either, a strength of his in college. Should he be getting more than the 5 MPG he’s gotten in the two non-blowout games? Probably, but don’t expect it. As I noted earlier tonight, Brown is a guy who almost never has his rookies average even double-digit minutes.
As for writing the season off, isn’t it pretty obvious the front office did that on July 28th? That was when they made a shameless play to get rid of the team’s most consistent player so it was more attractive to potential buyers.

I'm still trying to get over how we only beat the Nets by 11 without Devin Harris.
But I’m afraid if I think about it too much my head will explode.

AND Jarvis Hayes and Keyon Dooling, who both fit squarely into their rotation (if Hayes wouldn't even be starting.)

Charlotte Observer headline
“Bobcats Rally Past Struggling Nets”
Anyone else find it depressing that the Bobcats had to rally to beat a team that only scored 68 points?
Yes....
and that two promising rookies were kept on the bench in favor of struggling role players.
Blogging at Ridiculous Upside, where my terrible writing meets people's eyes.
True
I’m just glad they won. I am a Felton fan, but dude was really struggling yesterday. He should have been pulled. I don’t understand the Bobcats’ offensive strategy. There is very little motion and players don’t try to score until the shot clock reaches 10. I really hope they get it together against Atlanta. The Hawks are clearly a better team, but Charlotte usually plays them very competitively.
Side note: If I see Rad poke his mouthpiece out one more time after missing a layup/jump shot, I am going to lose it. He needs to find his stroke ASAP.

Dude has ALWAYS struggled.
His play is nothing new. And the offensive strategy is dictated by PG play. Ours has been poor since Brevin Knight hit the bench, and the offensive strategy has gone the same way.

While Chandler flip flops his way around the paint Wallace can be crashing to boards (forgive the pun)

Sean May
Sean May started for the Kings last night. He had 2 points on 1-5 shooting, 1 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover, and four fouls in nine minutes. Rough
