What are the chances Bell returns?

The scuttlebutt around the league (yes, I just wanted to use the word scuttlebutt) is that Raja Bell will likely end his season now and elect to get his wrist surgery so he can be ready to return in 2010, furthermore, it's rumored that he is very unhappy about being traded which exacerbates the situation.

Star-divide

Most people who knew Bell's situation pretty much knew he was playing injured for Coach Brown likely being convinced that we were potentially a playoff team with him, and had no chance without him. I hope Golden State fans weren't putting too much stock in Bell because it looks now like they just sent Stephen Jackson and Acie Law to us for Vladamir Radmanovich, but we know the value for the dubs was in future cap space.

Bell's contract is expiring this season, and Larry Brown loves his veterans, especially one's who he's coached before. However, he may be holding a grudge towards his former Coach and team for trading him.

For whom the Bell tolls

I like Raja Bell. He’s a class act. In the nice prissy froo froo world where all is fair in life, Raja would have been rewarded for playing through his pain for Charlotte. He didn’t just postpone surgery and play in pain, although that would have earned him major props and respect in itself. He risked even further damage – potentially permanent – every time he stepped on the court. He also risked greatly reducing his value to any team because a bum wrist means reduced efficiency and his stats for this season wouldn’t even come close to reflecting what they would have been had he been healthy. He’s a stand up guy, and where I come from that’s very high praise.

But this is the “kick ‘em when they’re down” world we all live in. The reward for willingness to risk a career for the team was a ticket out of town. It sucks and there’s no way around it. But don’t think any other team would have done differently. As I’ve said before, basketball is big business and in big business they eat their own young.

So Raja got dealt. I’m sure LB doesn’t like that it happened. It would be nice to think that he had a quiet chat with Raja in which he explained what was going on and promised Raj that once he was available and healthy Larry would use all his juice to bring him back. Hell, there’s some chance that might have really happened. But Brown also knows his own role. He’s been around and gotten enough knocks himself to know that the way it works in this league is that he comes into town on his record and reputation, builds the team his way – through trade and disruption – and then people get sick of him and toss him on the scrap heap. If Brown doesn’t bring results to Charlotte, his own days are numbered. He’ll have little trouble finding work if he wants it, but he’s getting older and will want to retire sooner rather than later. I don’t know how many promises Brown is going to make for future favors. I think it’s more likely that Brown shrugged his shoulders and told Bell that it was the best he could do – get him to a town where Brown had friends and connections and could make sure he got a fair shake from his new team. So Bell will lick his wounds. He’ll grumble for a couple of days. But as a stand up guy, he’ll get the lay of the land, make a friend or two on the squad, and then decide if he can help bring the dubs some success. If so, he’ll play. If not, or if he’s finally had enough of the crap, he’ll opt for the surgery and try to return next year.

If the Cats have a hole at his position and think they can get him on the cheap, he’ll be back here. If not, he’ll be in New York or Milwaulkee or some town trying to build a profitable team around a couple of name players and a stable supporting cast.

I think Brown is a decent enough guy that if he’s still coaching in the league he’ll try to make it right by Raja. LB is known for stocking his stable with people who did him right and Raja definitely fits the bill. But there are a lot of variables involved, not the least of which is how well Raja comes back from his surgery whenever he does decide to have it.

Actually, Bell wasn't risking further damage.

When he was given the go-ahead to play this season, it was because the doctors determined he was at no more risk to worsen his wrist than any other time he stepped on the court. It also wasn’t effecting his shot by his own admission, just causing him pain, which he chose to play through. And Bell didn’t decide to get the surgery because he couldn’t help the Warriors. He got it because he didn’t want to play for that disaster of a franchise.

Augustin can and certainly has played a decent bit of SG.

You just prefer to have a big guard on the court next to him.

Felton and Murray are both likely not to be back next year.

That's assuming they're all here for a while

The way the trades fly on a Brown team, that’s far from guaranteed.

Bell WILL have the season-ending surgery:

Brian Windhorst, the Cavs’ beat writer, reported it today on twitter. He’s tied in to the situation because Cleveland desperately wanted to pick up Jackson. As for the summer, I’m willing to say we’ve got about a 30% chance to lure him back, but not if we win 25 games this season (as we’re on pace for.) He’s too old and too solid at this point in his career to waste his time on a bad team.

If we flip Jackson to the Cavs who would they offer?

I heard they offered the Warriors Delonte West and Wally Sczerbiack.

We probably wouldn't get much better of an offer, UNLESS...

Cleveland has an injury to a rotation player or they start playing worse as a unit. One of the reasons they made such a poor offer was that they were pretty pleased with their roster so far, even without Delonte West, who is kind of a poor man’s Jackson in terms of his versatile productivity.

I'm looking at Leon Powe who's due back around Christmas.

If he can show he can contribute I’d love to see us get him.

Where'd you see that?

Last I heard about him was just before the All-Star game, but he wouldn’t even commit to that; said he was taking things “month-to-month” at this point. (As of 9/28)

Feel good story

Wasn’t it him whom Larry Brown had to order to go home from practice because his newlywed wife and he was staying way past everyone else? That kind of work ethic is sorely missed

Sorry Guys

He is fitting in nicely and likes his new team.

Yeah, sure...
Don’t get too excited, as he’s still planning on having wrist surgery in the near future, but felt the need to help his new team because they are so short handed. “I can’t play 82 games like this,” he said after the game. He is scheduled to go under the knife sooner than later.

No he doesn't

He was willing to put off surgery in order to play for the Bobcats but now that he’s on the Warriors he will be having surgery, which could be season ending. He must love Golden State.

He loves it hear just worry about your ball hoggin, black hole who will shot less tahn 40% from the field, stop ball flow and turn the ball over 5 times a game. Nice!!!

I’m less worried about Stephen Jackson than the dubs should be about losing Monta Ellis because you’re organization lied to your stars.

by James The Aussie on Nov 21, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But if you read his post game comments when he played he was a professional. He will play where ever he goes. And the Monta rumors were fake and were started by a reporter named Tim kawakami. He is notorious for starting fake rumors around here. Monta’s agent is also the agent of Andre Ward who is in town this week for a boxing match, not too talk about trades. Please get your facts straight before stating these things…. PS Vlad has been playing really well over here. Thanks for him and Bell (even if he’s just an expiring deal) for Jack!

Vlad's playing well?

The guy has 27 points on 26 shots through three games. That’s less than efficient.

it's not about his effiency right now

He’s been a great energy player. He’s moving the ball well, running the floor, actually playing good D and when he’s on the floor we actually have played better than if Maggette is on the floor because of how well he is moving the ball and his overall hustle. Something that can’t be measured in stats

Yeah, the Warriors and the word "efficient" are not peas in a pod....

More like “run” and “rookie-hatred” seem appropriate.

Or hatred on a future star (Randolph)

We personally hate Nelly now. He has a lot of double standards since he supports our rookie in Curry and gives him heavy minutes but won’t play Randolph… Sigh.. We both struggle from crazy coaches
