Bobcats Lose to Magic 93-81
I haven't seen the AP or Observer recaps, but I'd put even money on one of them using the term "hard fought". The Bobcats went down big early, but then stormed back in the third quarter, eventually pulling within six in the fourth quarter before the Magic rounded back into form and pulled away again.
In losing 93-81, the Bobcats demonstrated they have the capacity to score against a good defensive team in stretches. However, they have also yet to show they can combine that offensive upside for a whole game with the defense they'd played last season and earlier this year. It's what separates them from the playoff contenders.
Highlights and lowlights after the jump.
BAD
-- They're not good three point shooters, yet they hoist 'em up. 2-17 tonight.
-- I'm scared for D.J. Augustin. He looks like he's regressed, and just about every relevant stat is down across the board in these first few games. Tonight? Lost on defense, lost on offense. The assured manner that marked his rookie season is somewhere in the ether, probably cavorting around with his three point stroke.
-- Forget tracking Okafor/Chandler: I'm developing an obsession with comparing Gerald Henderson's minutes to Stephen Graham's. 2 1/2 minutes for Henderson tonight, the last 2 1/2 minutes of the game, after everything was virtually decided. Graham? He got more than 11 wholly ineffective minutes, including crunch time while Chandler was out with five fouls and Diaw was playing center.
-- Dude. VladRad. My man. Something wrong? Wanna talk?
-- Tyson Chandler only played a little more than 11 minutes, but that's not really his fault. Yes, he got in foul trouble, but Larry Brown refused to play him from about 9 minutes to go in the first quarter through the end of the first half... because he had two fouls. Two! If you have three fouls at the half, you're on pace to foul out at the end of the game. It's okay to have three fouls going into the second half. Really. It is. In the second quarter, Chandler should have played until he had three fouls, and then in the third quarter played until he got his fourth, and then in the fourth quarter played until he got his fifth, until four minutes to go, when you let things fly. Not complicated.
GOOD
-- Raymond Felton played like a real point guard tonight, making smart decisions again and again. Only 1 turnover, and I counted only one wildly ill-advised shot, though that layup attempt was a score.
-- Nazr Mohammed used every ounce of veteran savvy to show why team after team has seen fit to employ him over the years, despite not a single plus skill other than height. At times, he gave Dwight Howard trouble at both ends of the floor with his quick shuffling and multiple pump fakes.

Can someone please...
give Stevie Graham the Nancy Kerrigan treatment? Get Gerald (the other one) some minutes.

I can't say I blame Augustin...
Now that Bell’s back, he has to play with the dregs of the NBA that comprise our second unit. The most PT he’s gotten since Bell’s return is with the combination of Henderson, Graham, Brown, and Ajinca. Yuck.

Plus/minus for today's game
Felton was the only Bobcat in positive figures with a +5
Augustin was the team worst at -17.
The beginning of the 4th quarter when Raymond sat in lieu of Augustin was ultimately the killer. I didn’t understand why DJ and Graham were playing at that junction of the game anyway.

Yeah
I don’t get it…
IF you throw DJ on the floor, how about sticking him with someone decent to pass to.
Not that we have many options…

Would you stop kissing D.J.'s ass?
I love the kid, but he hasn’t looked as good as he was last season since he shot about 30 free throws in the preseason. I’ve seen him make awful turnovers, look totally lost, and not play a bit of defense. Dude is right. Charlotte got it down to about 6 points back then D.J. plays the beginning of the forth and all our momentum is gone.
I know you’re going to want to turn this into a D.J. vs. Felton thing, but it’s not. Bad play is bad play and D.J. has played poorly the last few games. That is his fault, not his teammates. You can at least be objective with your criticism.
I wonder how much "good play" we could get out of Steve Nash playing alongside our scrubby reserves.

Fabulous point
If a two time MVP played next to our reserves he would play exactly like D.J. did last night. There’s no debating that at all. In fact, it’s clearly the only logical conclusion that you can come to. You could even say that it’s scientific proof that D.J. is not to blame for playing like shit. Mean ol’ Larry Brown put the Carolina voodoo on him just because he didn’t go to the right school.
I just asked the question.

You are correct sir
Be objective…
DJ can’t hit a shot
VladRad can’t hit a shot
Bell can’t hit a shot
Felton can’t hit a shot
G Force can’t hit a shot
Chandler can’t not foul
Diaw can’t…well…be last year’s Diaw
Diop can’t keep the bench warm enough
Nazr is showing some life
Flip has his moments
Graham can’t belong in the NBA
Henderson can’t get playing time
D Brown…well…If he would play…I’d try to pick his weakness too…

The problem isn't just D.J
Every single one of our reserves were in the minus last night… all of them. Except Gerald Henderson who was a zero.
Actually, we only had 4 players who weren’t in the minus Chandler, Bell and Henderson (all with 0) and Felton +5.

Who said the probelm is just D.J.?
No need to argue a phantom James.
To be clear. The point that I was making is this: Anyone who rips other when they play poorly but makes excuses for D.J. when he’s playing like shit is a hypocrite. It makes no sense and there’s no objectivity to it.
How was I arguing anyone?
I wrote a statement, not a response.

A few observations
Earlier, in David’s preview thread for the game I said that the Magic would come out storming in the first quarter and the game could well be ours if we weathered that blow. We didn’t. So instead of breaking away at the end we “came back” to within 6. I said it would be a big chance for our frontcourt to get into the action. As the game progressed we took fewer and fewer inside shots until we barely penetrated the paint in the fourth.
Why? It wasn’t Vince Carter’s return. It wasn’t anything new. It wasn’t because we got outclassed. We played tough for almost three full quarters. It was what is becoming the same old crap.
We’re all getting sick to death of watching Henderson ride the pine. But at least LB used his bench better than he has thus far this season. The reason for this was largely because of what I believe is the single deadliest problem on the team and I’m sick to puke of it.
You Tyson Chandler lovers might as well skip to the next paragraph. Funny thing about basketball – even street games; you can’t score from the bench. You can’t defend from the bench either. The only thing you can do from the bench is suck – especially if you’re a starter. I’ve had it. Tyson Chandler sucks and I’m sorry David, it’s not Larry Brown to blame for it. Chandler is the worst thing to happen to the Charlotte Bobcats since inception. He sucks up a full 20 percent of our salary cap and will be doing so again next season as well. For that kind of imput, we should get 20 percent of our production value from the man – either in points, boards, assists, defense, leadership, or some combination thereof. Thus far all he’s managed to do is suck up fouls. He’s the Hoover of fouls. Tonight, once again, he was in foul trouble in the first 5 minutes of the game, came back in the second half, got 2 more along with a technical in less than 25 seconds, and wound up once again with total of 5. Once again, his foul stat exceeded his point production. He has more than twice the fouls of anyone else on the roster and is averaging over 4 fouls per game. No, that isn’t a joke. 29 personal fouls and 2 technicals in 7 games. THIS is our starting center? There isn’t a single positive stat anyone can pull out on this man that will in my mind negate this massive negative. Every time he walks off the court for an extended break due to foul trouble it throws our entire team off our game. He can’t play without jacking his lip at either opposing players or the refs. We can’t take any team out of THEIR game when we can’t play our own for more than 2 minues at a stretch. We can play well without Okafor, that’s not what’s hurting us. What’s hurting us on almost every level of the game, from the stat sheet to the balance sheet, is the gaping hole in the roster where a professional basketplayer is supposed to stand. His play is hurting this team like tetanus. Either he gets his poop in one bowl in a hurry, or we won’t have to worry about lottery purgatory at the end of the year because he’ll ensure us plenty of balls in the bucket.
Augustin has been off is game badly almost since the moment Flip and Raja came back and if he doesn’t want to find himself as a big ol’ chunk of trade chum in a hurry he needs to adlust to his role. Perhaps he could chat with Del Curry. Talk about a 6th man to learn from! I loved DJ last year and think this is just a temporary speed bump, but the dude needs to work this stuff out.
So now it’s off to Detroit. We can still win this road game and I believe we will. At least we know Tyson will be well rested!

On to the next one...
The Cats should be well rested since they elected to show very little effort in the 1st half. I had to change the channel for a few minutes with Diaw air balled that hook shot. The Pistons are decent, but they really don’t put any fear in my heart. The Cats should take this one and get back to .500.

why Steven Graham? I want to see Ajnica and Brown over Diop and Radmonavich as well
Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER
rest of the team=*yawn*
Yeah...
What the hell…Stevie hasn’t shown me JACK…
at least stick Henderson in there for some experience…
SEE what he can do in crunch time…the worst he can do is produce like Stevie does…
The best…WHO KNOWS YET???!!?

I'll be shocked if either he or "NBA-ready" Derrick Brown
get any significant playing time all season.
Blogging at Ridiculous Upside, where my terrible writing meets people's eyes.
why can't the best players play and then see what happens?
Augustin with felton as backup Raja with Flip and Henderson as backups Boris with Brown as backup and Chandler with Mohammed as backup and Ajinca playing at PF and C?
why the hell can’t we try that? Steven Graham and Diop are garbage
Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER
Other than forgetting Gerald Wallace...
that’s a decent line-up.
