Gameday Preview vs. Orlando Magic

Pump Up Music: Dropkick Muphys -- "Rocky Road to Dublin"

The Big Picture: Holy crap, the Bobcats are undefeated at home, and they've got a chance to continue that streak against a title-hopeful Magic team because Orlando's down a few key players. Rashard Lewis is still suspended, and key reserve Ryan Anderson will be out again with an ankle injury. Vince Carter will supposedly be a gametime decision, but with Orlando playing a back to back in Charlotte tonight and at home against Cleveland tomorrow, there will be a temptation to not risk Vince's health before the apparently tougher game.

Star-divide

The Cats head to Detroit tomorrow for the second half of their back to back, and then they'll have two days off before their next game, at home, against Portland. As much as we may bash Stephen Graham here, he's really kind of perfect for how many back to backs we have, since he can play filler at the two and three for stretches without completely embarrassing himself. The tenth, eleventh, and twelfth men need to be able to provide these kinds of minutes on a team that imagines itself a playoff contender, and in these next two games, here's hoping the minutes get spread through all twelve roster spots, just like the last back to back.

Key to Victory: Rebounding. Without Lewis, Orlando has actually attempted fewer threes than Charlotte this season in one more game. I haven't seen Orlando's offense this year, but that implies they're not spreading the floor the same way they did last year, with four guys around the perimeter and daring teams to double Dwight Howard inside.

Last year, Orlando was tremendous on the defensive boards, but spreading the floor left them extremely thin on the offensive boards. Thus far this year, they're not quite as good at defensive rebounding, but they're improved on the offensive glass, probably because of the changed style. They were content to let opponents get lots of rebounds as long as they were making lots of threes, too, but now that the three isn't such a potent weapon for them, they can't afford to allow so many boards off their misses and continue to be successful.

Detail That May Interest .08% of You: Chris Webber was the Magic's first pick of the 1993 draft, but was immediately traded for Anfernee Hardaway and three first round picks, the last of which ended up being Mike Miller, Rookie of the Year in 2000.

Reading the Orlando blogs

There isn’t a whole lot going on in the Orlando blog universe. In fact, the lack of new columns makes me grateful for the group we have here at Rufus on Fire.

I expect Orlando to come out tonight fast and furious. Van Gundy trashed his team pretty bluntly in the media after their blowout loss to the Thunder and they’ll be looking to prove themselves. If the Bobcats can weather the first quarter we have, as David said, a chance to stay undefeated at home.

The Magic have been showing a tendency to rely entirely on offense and have been slow in defensive transition. They have given up almost 100 points per game and this could mean a big night inside for our frontcourt. We could definitely use it. If our forwards will display some motion and provide targets for our guards, we should get some good looks at the basket from up close. Wallace should be able to draw fouls at will and Tyson Chandler can give us several nice highlight clips if he can keep his fouling habit under control long enough to give us good minutes. Even VladRad might actually be able to bully his way to a few layups instead of relying on 3-point bombs.

In Orlando’s 2 losses, they were taken out of their game plan because of tough defense by their opponents. Since defense is definitely the strong suit of our Bobcats, and Vince Carter isn’t likely to see much if any time on the court tonight, this looks to be our best opportunity to beat the Magic this season.

One thing I think we should keep in mind is that we do indeed hit Detroit tomorrow night and they are another team that’s being crippled with key injuries right now. In fact, they’ve been forced to start their second round pick Jonas Jarebko in place of Tayshaun Prince. It’s never wise for players and coaches to look past the current game, but since I’m neither in this case, I’ll take the risk. This is quite likely our best chance to win home and away for a while and a good opportunity for us to win our first road game to boot. A good showing tonight that doesn’t run our starters ragged is a real possibility. Here’s hoping.

Go get ’em Cats!

LOL...

Chandler and highlight clips in the same sentence.

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

that is pretty funny

maybe an alley oop over dwight while he’s not looking will make the cut

Exactly!

He has the capability, he likes his passes to arrive high and I think he actually has the chance to give us a highlight moment or two. I do write for a living and I know I’m not going to be able to use the name Chandler and the words “highlight clips” in a single sentence very often with a straight face. I gotta take my chances where I can! Thanks for the opportunity to do it twice! lol

Via Bonnell, Carter didn't participate in the shootaround this morning...

Stan VanGreasy says they’ll play with nine and Carter will not be among them.

For me, tonight's the kind of game that will set the true tone for the season.

A good team, weakened by injury who we should be able to finish off. It’s not just about beating teams who are worse than you, it’s also about putting the screws to teams you wouldn’t normally beat when the opportunity arises.

Dwight Howard will also represent the first AAA test for Tyson Chandler and we should see if the move to get ‘more athletic’ will pay off.

Action?

The way LB has been using his bench of late the only action the rooks will see tonight is if they rent a Rambo movie to watch after the game!
